My mother died last week.

There's really nothing more to say than that to convey a sense of grief. There's so much more that needs to be said to convey the loss.

She was 57 years old. She had the flu. She had a massive coronary more than likely brought on as a side effect of her prescribed flu medicine. That's the minutiae.

She was strong and healthy. She was determined. She was constantly busy on one project or another. Those of us that were her confidants as opposed to being merely her family or friends knew how busy she was. It seemed natural to us that she would always have a million things to do. First and formost was raising myself and my sister. Then came the task of keeping my father alive and healthy after his heart attacks. When her mother died, there came the role of family matriarch. Then of grandmother. Add into this a full time job and it seems like enough to keep most anyone occupied. But Mom never had idle hands. Mom was always working on something project-oriented. Quilts and stained glass. Cross-stitch and oil painting. Picture framing and more picture framing- her walls were covered with photos of family and others she loved. She made shadow boxes celebrating various family members; Kendra called her an heirloom factory. She was constantly working on her flower gardens as well. Always in the garden. She kept busy. Then comes the full cycle of her church life where she volunteered in the nursery and all of the kids called her Grammy just like her own grandkids. Through her church, she donated quilts that she had made at home. They were sent to cancer patients anonymously, the charity far outstripping the need for credit. She volunteered on occasion at a local homeless shelter. If there was a need, she wanted to find a solution. She still found time to have a social life. I am amazed by her. I will always be in awe of what she managed to make seem so easy.

I'm selfishly holding back all of the good memories from you.

She was my Mom and I miss her.

I guess that means you're probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.

I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most.
There was a time that insomnia was a powerful force to be harnessed for the good of my productivity. Then came the sleeping sickness. Not an abnormal amount of sleep for the average schmo, but to someone used to 4 hours of sleep on average and 6 hours of sleep at absolute best, a regular sleep schedule of 8-10 hours does horrible things to your day. That's four hours fewer waking moments on average.

What does one do with 4 hours? Cleaning? Watch TV? Play video games? Comics? 4 Hours. That's a part time job. But now I sleep.

I can't say that I haven't enjoyed the sleeping with the dreams and the resting. I just can't figure out when I'm supposed to get anything done.

Then comes an increasingly rare night. Tossing and turning. Restlessness. Fighting to sleep. And then I remembered. I got up. I got some things done. I'm still not tired. Now for some video games.

I'm nowhere near noble enough to blindly encourage you to vote. For instance, if you're gonna vote for anyone other than Kerry, I'd just as soon you stay home. So if you're stupid enough to want to vote for anyone else, stay home. I'm not saying that you're brain damaged, I'm just saying that you prolly wouldn't notice a claw hammer parked in your skull and since that's obviously an indication that something's wrong, stay home.

So, go vote.

For KERRY.

Dearest Sir,
As I fondly wish you along in your '20s, version the second, it must
be made known to you that my appearance shall be conditional upon a
general improvement in my health. Now lest you worry, I would assuage
your concerns that anything dire has beset itself upon my person with
the sure knowledge that it is the merest of unseasonable influenzas as
accommodated by my weakened state due to allergen reactions.
Fortunately, the local chemist has a potent elixir which at the best
of times removes in their entirety the symptoms of my symbiontic
afflictions and at the worst... well, let it remain that while the
more harmless of demons ask for neither blood nor human sacrifices,
the demon known as NyQuil oftentimes requests them both. If this
upcoming Thursday, the 23rd, should be an evening devoid of such
Lovecraftian accommodation, then you shall have my most enthusiastic
presence.
Dickensianly yours,
-Christopher
